Wise and otherwise –A salute to life, Mrs. Sudha Murthy

Story -5 when the mop count did not tally

Review by Prasanna Kumar, librarian, kendriya vidyalaya No 1 vijayawada.

This book wise and otherwise –A Salute to life is a collection of stories written by Mrs.Sudha Murthy. The best part of this book is that all the stories presented in this book are from the author’s life experiences. Thus this book grabs the attention of the readers easily. This review is all about the 5th story from the book, titled “When the mop count did not tally”.

The story is a conversation between the author and her father it revolves around a situation in a hospital operation theater. This story explains to us how operation theater procedures are actually handled. When a nurse found that the mop count was not tallied after the surgery, what happened to the surgery? What is the reaction of the doctor? How does the nurse stand on her word? And finally how the problem got solved was the entire story.

The best part of this story is “obey the principle taught by your teachers, when experienced teachers say something then they must have their reasons”.

My favorite part in this book is that in every story we find a moral to learn as the stories in this book are the life experiences of the author, and also the entire content in this book is present in very simple English where we can easily understand even without taking help of the dictionary, which will generally create interest in readers.

I recommend this book to all my school children as they can learn a lot of moral values from this book

Finally, I rate this book 5 stars and hope my review will create some interest in the readers to pick up this book for reading.

Thank you for reading my review,

J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit is one of the best-known and best-loved fantasy books. First published by George Allen & Unwin in 1937, The Hobbit has been translated into over 50 different languages and sold well over 100 million copies. The Hobbit was written by Professor Tolkien for the reading pleasure of his own children, of whom Christopher became the editor of Tolkien's posthumous works such as The Silmarillion and The Book of Lost Tales.

A book full of adventure, heroism, song, and laughter, featuring landscapes. Bilbo, our reluctant hero, encounters Dwarves, Elves, Goblins, Eagles, and Wizards as the party passes through Rivendell, The Misty Mountains, and Mirkwood on their way to the Lonely Mountain, in order to take back treasure stolen by the great dragon Smaug.

One of the most appealing aspects of The Hobbit is that we can all find our inner Hobbit; the part of us that wants nothing but an easy and comfortable life. But there is still something inside all of us that perks up at the thought of adventure and a journey into the unknown and I think this is why The Hobbit is such a firm favourite and fondly remembered by all who read it.

The Hobbit is quite simply a must-read, a real delight.

10/10 The Hobbit is fondly remembered by all who read it, as a real delight.

“Gently Falls the Bakula” is a beautiful story of two different individuals- Srikant and Shrimati Deshpande, who both approach life very differently from each other. Srikant is a very ambitious guy from the very beginning who falls in love with the very intelligent yet simple girl Shrimati for whom nothing is more important than Srikant’s companionship and his happiness. This simple story turns into a complex one, when Srikant starts loving his career more than Shrimati and when she starts realizing that her life is going nowhere apart from revolving around her husband and his needs. Though here we sympathize with Shrimati a lot more than Srikant, I felt somewhere she is also responsible for his change in behavior. I felt She was more submissive than needed. Submissive to some extent is fine in any relationship but if it goes beyond necessary then obviously that person is taken for granted and that’s what happened here too. The open ending is quite appropriate here, but still, I would like to assume that at one point in time, they again met and lived with each other happily!!

A typical Sudha Murthy book:
- Simple story
- Not too long
- Strong Characters

You pick any Sudha Murty book and you are glued to it till the end despite the simplicity (and repetitiveness of plots). They are not a great literary treat but her storytelling is simply riveting. It makes you visualize the scenes as if being enacted, the surroundings, and everything. Her books are set back in time but the issues are still relevant and you can very well relate to them.

Finally, I rate this book 5 stars and hope my review will create some interest in the readers to pick up this book for reading.
